Tensabarrier® solutions used across Metroline bus depots to improve safety in vehicle maintenance pits
23 May 2012 – Tensator, a world-leader in safety barrier systems, has announced it has won the contract to supply London transport provider Metroline with the latest retractable safety belt technology – designed to enhance employee safety across its network of bus depots. The news comes as figures reveal that almost a quarter of all fatal injuries at work were caused by slips, trips and falls from height in 2010/11, with a similar percentage responsible for major injuries.
Tensator is recognised as the inventor of the renowned Tensabarrier®, one of the safest barriers in the world. They have installed 299 high-visibility, retractable webbing barriers around Metroline’s potentially dangerous vehicle pits across 7 depots, in order to help prevent falls in accordance with the Health & Safety Executive’s (HSE) directive for best practice in the motor vehicle industry.
The Tensabarrier®Tensator’s retractable safety belts have been supplied to bus operator Metroline technology from Tensator is extremely flexible, and can move with each pit bridge, to ensure that the potentially hazardous areas are cordoned off at all times. The barriers carry the warning “Beware Open Pit,” with supporting visuals to reinforce the meaning and overcome any possible language difficulties.
Tony Lambard, head of safety and facilities at Metroline, comments: “With a fleet of 1,200 buses to service, our workshops can be very busy places. Metroline takes employee safety very seriously, so we were keen to utilise Tensator’s technology to take our preventative health and safety measures to the next level.”
In order to maximise the effectiveness of the new system, Tensator’s health and safety experts first established Metroline’s specific needs and then provided a tailored service right through to the installation of the solutions.
